Over the summer, Greater Albany Public Schools will transition to a new Student Information System (SIS) database. During the transition period, the registration system will be down for up to three weeks and families will be unable to register during that time period. In anticipation of this disruption, the district is requesting families register students early this year and has opened up the registration portal. 

“This summer as the district and Linn-Benton ESD transition to a new software platform, Synergy, it is important to have our families register students early this year,” said Superintendent Andy Gardner. “By registering in the spring instead of in the summer, we can more effectively plan for staffing and space for the 2023-24 school year.” 

Families should review this important information regarding registration:

• Registration in the old system will be automatically transferred into the new system. Please do not register your student twice.
• Forms should have recently gone home with your student containing a Parent ID number (PIV number)  along with additional registration information. The PIV number must be used to complete registration. If you did not receive your letter with your PIV number, please contact your school office.
• Students who are enrolling in the district for the first time should be prepared to provide proof of address, proof of age, and proof of immunization. 
• Families should use a computer or laptop to complete registration. Those who need assistance may reach out to their student’s home school for support. 

If you are unsure if your child will be returning to their current school next year, the district still requests families register as it allows for space planning. 

For Spanish-speaking families, each school should have a bilingual staff member who can assist with registration. Spanish-speaking families should contact their home school to set up an appointment. 

Additionally, the Welcome Center is planning a registration evening for Spanish-speaking families on Tuesday, May 9. Appointments at the Welcome Center will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 9, and the center will be open for drop-in registration help from 5 to 8 p.m. More information about the Welcome Center’s registration event may be obtained by calling (541) 704-2376.

Inscriba a su estudiante temprano este año

Durante el verano, las Escuelas Públicas de Greater Albany harán la transición a una nueva base de datos del Sistema de Información Estudiantil (SIS por sus siglas en inglés). Durante el período de transición, el sistema de inscripción estará inactivo por hasta tres semanas y las familias no podrán registrarse durante ese período de tiempo. Anticipándose a esta interrupción, el distrito solicita que las familias inscriban a los estudiantes temprano este año y ha abierto el portal de inscripción.

Volunteers provide support and enrich the educational experience

Parent and community volunteers provide essential support to staff and enrich the educational experience of students. GAPS is fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who provide key contributions in classrooms and in the GAPS community. 

“Volunteers are vital to the success of our schools,” said Superintendent Andy Gardner. “Dedicated volunteers assist with our school operations and help classrooms run smoothly, all while having a lasting impact on our students. We appreciate each and every one of our school volunteers.” 

One such volunteer is Autumn Bashaw. Bashaw has been volunteering in the district off and on for the last 15 years. “I’m grateful for the lifelong friendships I’ve made by volunteering, both with teachers and other parents,” she said. 

Bashaw is scheduled to volunteer weekly at Tangent Elementary School. She usually performs the same tasks: labeling, putting together work packets, and filing. While she is not always in her kids’ classrooms, she likes being near them. “It’s special to be a part of what my kids are doing and to be able to feel connected with them and what’s going on in their lives,” she said.

Gail Brunker, a retired community member, also enjoys volunteering as a way to connect with his child. Brunker’s daughter is a first-grade teacher at Sunrise Elementary. He has regularly volunteered in his daughter’s classroom for the last two years as a way to spend more time with her and to “see her in her space.”

“And,” he adds, “the kids are fun to be around!”

Another volunteer, Allanna Cox, appreciates the connection that volunteering brings. “If you’re feeling like you don’t know what’s going on at the schools, volunteer. Volunteering opens up a channel of communication between the school and families,” she explained. 

Cox volunteers weekly at South Shore Elementary School, where she assists in the library. Cox learned the ins and outs of book shelving and library organization as a volunteer and later when she worked at the Corvallis-Benton County public library. When she discovered a need for shelving books at South Shore, she was eager to offer her skills. “Volunteering allows me to directly help our school even in a nonfinancial way,” she said.”I feel more involved and aware of what is going on in the school and I get to know the students.”

The district is always looking for parent and community volunteers. Volunteer schedules are flexible and do not require a big time commitment. With a variety of tasks ranging from laminating to groundskeeping, there are opportunities for people of all skill levels. “Definitely take the opportunity to volunteer,” Cox added. “The schools can always use the help.”

Those interested in volunteering must complete a criminal background check and submit an online form. Additionally, volunteers must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a scanned religious or medical exception request and a COVID-19 mandate attestation. Los voluntarios brindan apoyo y enriquecen la experiencia educativa

Los padres y los voluntarios de la comunidad brindan apoyo esencial al personal y enriquecen la experiencia educativa de los estudiantes. GAPS tiene la suerte de contar con voluntarios dedicados que brindan contribuciones clave en las aulas y en la comunidad de GAPS. 

“Los voluntarios son vitales para el éxito de nuestras escuelas”, dijo el Superintendente Sr. Andy Gardner. “Voluntarios dedicados ayudan con las operaciones de nuestras escuelas y ayudan a que las aulas funcionen sin problemas, todo mientras tienen un impacto duradero en nuestros estudiantes. Agradecemos a todos y cada uno de los voluntarios de nuestras escuelas”.

Uno de esos voluntarios es la Sra. Autumn Bashaw. La Sra. Bashaw ha sido voluntaria en el distrito de vez en cuando durante los últimos 15 años. “Estoy agradecida por las amistades de por vida que hice como voluntaria, tanto con maestros como con otros padres”, dijo.

La Sra. Bashaw está programada para ser voluntaria semanalmente en la Escuela Primaria Tangent. Suele realizar las mismas tareas: etiquetar, armar paquetes de trabajo y archivar. Si bien no siempre está en las aulas de sus hijos, le gusta estar cerca de ellos. “Es especial ser parte de lo que hacen mis hijos y poder sentirme conectada con ellos y con lo que sucede en sus vidas”, dijo.

El Sr. Gail Brunker, miembro jubilado de la comunidad, también disfruta ser voluntario como una forma de conectarse con su hija. La hija de Brunker es maestra de primer grado en la escuela primaria Sunrise. Se ha ofrecido regularmente como voluntario en el salón de clases de su hija durante los últimos dos años como una forma de pasar más tiempo con ella y “verla en su ambiente”

“Y”, agrega, “¡es divertido estar cerca de los niños!”.

Otra voluntaria, la Sra. Allanna Cox, aprecia la conexión que brinda el voluntariado. “Si siente que no sabe lo que está pasando en las escuelas, sea voluntario. El voluntariado abre un canal de comunicación entre la escuela y las familias”, explicó.

La Sra. Cox es voluntaria semanalmente en la Escuela Primaria South Shore, donde ayuda en la biblioteca. La Sra. Cox aprendió las entradas y salidas de la estantería de libros y la organización de la biblioteca como voluntaria y más tarde cuando trabajó en la biblioteca pública del Condado de Corvallis-Benton. Cuando descubrió la necesidad de colocar libros en estantes en South Shore, estaba ansiosa por ofrecer sus habilidades. “Ser voluntaria me permite ayudar directamente a nuestra escuela, incluso de una manera no financiera”, dijo. “Me siento más involucrada y consciente de lo que sucede en la escuela y llego a conocer a los estudiantes”.

Orientation held in May for Albany schools

Kindergarten registration is now open, and orientation and enrollment events begin in early May for Greater Albany Public Schools. The district is home to several kindergarten classes across 12 elementary schools in Linn and Benton Counties.

“We look forward to welcoming the Class of 2036 to our schools this fall,” said Superintendent Andy Gardner. “We hope our incoming kindergarten families will enroll their students this spring and visit their home school during orientation.”

Before the student’s orientation day, families are encouraged to register their student online at https://albany.registar.lblesd.k12.or.us/en-us/home.aspx.

A student will be admitted to kindergarten if their fifth birthday occurs on or before September 1, or is a kindergarten student transferring from a public school in another district. Students with a birthday between June through August have the option of waiting to enroll in kindergarten. If a student has already completed kindergarten, that student is not eligible to repeat kindergarten and will be enrolled in first grade.

Families can help their child prepare for kindergarten by reading aloud to the child each night, and by developing and following morning and evening routines. More information on kindergarten registration may be found on the district’s website under the parent tab or by visiting https://albany.k12.or.us/parents/kindergarten-information.
